On this second Sunday of Advent, we're excited to announce a giveaway featuring our M/S Carry in Grand Herringbone, paired with the inspiring book 'Life, Work, World' of renowned Danish architect and furniture designer Finn Juhl.
In what is commonly referred to as the golden age of Danish design, Finn Juhl (1912-89) was one of the most influential designers. His furniture, decorations and exhibition designs were recognized internationally from an early stage. Finn Juhl designed furniture with the human body in mind. This characteristic made him stand out from his midcentury peers in Denmark and Scandinavia alike. Rather than limiting himself to thinking in terms of practical construction, Finn Juhl adopted the mindset of a sculptor when shaping furniture.
As a key figure in the 1950s, Juhl was central to the creation of the term 'Danish Design'. This term marked the export success as well as the unique version of modernism in architecture, design and art, which became trademarks of Scandinavian welfare societies. Today the furniture of Finn Juhl is considered classics and can be found in museums all over the world. The “Høvdingestol” (the Chieftain Armchair) and the sofa “Poeten” (the Poet Sofa) are famous as a symbol of the union between the useful, the beautiful and concise simplicity. Today, his own private home in Ordrup, north of Copenhagen, is a museum that displays his significant sense of unity between function, space and object, colour, light and atmosphere.
Finn Juhl and the legacy he left behind remain a constant source of inspiration in our own effort to create products that merge functionality, pleasing aesthetics and concise simplicity.
